Road Rules in Cyprus: What Visitors Often Forget

When preparing for your flight from Larnaca International Airport (LCA), the journey to the terminal should be as stress-free as possible. While you might be focused on packing and flight details, it’s worth taking a moment to remember some essential Cyprus road rules, especially if you’re accustomed to driving elsewhere. These are often the little details visitors tend to forget, and knowing them can prevent unnecessary delays or fines.

The Left-Hand Side Rule and Roundabouts

For many visitors, the most significant adjustment is driving on the left-hand side of the road. This rule applies throughout Cyprus, including on motorways and smaller village roads. It’s not just about which side of the road to drive on; it also dictates the positioning of the driver's seat (on the right) and how you approach junctions and roundabouts.

  • Roundabouts: Always give way to traffic already on the roundabout, approaching from your right. Signal appropriately when entering and exiting. When taking the first exit, signal left upon approach. For other exits, signal right upon approach, and then left as you pass the exit before yours.
  • Overtaking: You should always overtake on the right.
  • Junctions: When turning right at a junction, you will cross the path of oncoming traffic, so ensure the way is clear.

Even if you’ve driven on the left before, a quick mental refresh before you set off can be beneficial, particularly on busy routes towards the airport.

Speed Limits and Signage

Cyprus has clear speed limits, but they can vary depending on the type of road and area. Ignoring these can lead to fines, which is the last thing you want before catching a flight.

  • Motorways: The general speed limit is 100 km/h (approximately 62 mph), with a minimum limit of 65 km/h.
  • Outside Built-up Areas: Usually 80 km/h (approximately 50 mph).
  • Within Built-up Areas: Generally 50 km/h (approximately 31 mph).

Always pay close attention to road signs, as local variations or temporary limits might be in place. Speed cameras are common, so adherence to limits is strictly enforced. It's also worth noting that road signs primarily use Greek, though major routes and tourist areas will often have English translations.

Other Important Regulations

Beyond the basics, a few other rules are commonly overlooked:

  • Mobile Phones: It is illegal to use a handheld mobile phone while driving. If you need to make a call, use a hands-free system or pull over safely.
  • Seatbelts: Seatbelts are mandatory for all occupants, front and rear.
  • Drinking and Driving: Cyprus has strict drink-driving laws. The legal limit is 22 micrograms of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath, or 50 milligrams per 100 millilitres of blood. It’s always best to have a designated driver if you plan to consume alcohol.
  • Parking: Do not park on double yellow lines at any time. Single yellow lines allow for dropping off or picking up passengers but not parking. Always check local signs for parking restrictions.
  • Headlights: During daylight hours, dipped headlights are not generally required, but they are mandatory from half an hour after sunset to half an hour before sunrise, and in conditions of poor visibility.
